Mailchimp Transactional (Mandrill) vs MailAnvil 2026: $20/block vs Flat Rupiah
Mandrill built its name as the transactional-email workhorse for developers. Then Mailchimp folded it into the marketing platform and relaunched it as Mailchimp Transactional Email. The engine is still solid — but for Indonesian developers the pricing model is where it hurts.
Let's run the numbers. FX reference: $1 ≈ Rp 16.000 (August 2026).
The block model: you pay $20 before you send anything
Mailchimp Transactional sells email in blocks. From their pricing page, verbatim: "Each block is a credit for 25,000 emails." The per-block price drops as you buy more:

Two things stand out immediately. First, there is no free tier — the minimum purchase is one block at $20/month (≈ Rp 320.000) just to send a single transactional email in production. Second, the price is per block of 25.000, so a developer sending 30.000 emails a month pays for two blocks.
MailAnvil has no block math. It's flat Rupiah tiers:

At 100.000 emails a month — a realistic ceiling for a growing SaaS or fintech — Mailchimp Transactional costs $80 while MailAnvil costs Rp 599.000 (~$40). Roughly half. At a million emails the gap widens to 3.8×.
The credit-card wall, again
Mailchimp Transactional bills in USD and requires a credit card. No QRIS, no GoPay, no bank transfer. If you're a startup in Jakarta with a local debit card and a thin runway, that's a real blocker — the same wall you hit with Mailgun, SendGrid, and every other international provider.
MailAnvil accepts QRIS and GoPay. You pay for transactional email the same way you pay for coffee.
Latency matters when it's an OTP
Mailchimp's infrastructure is optimized for the US market. From Jakarta, a round trip to a US-based sending endpoint adds 150–200ms of latency before the email even leaves the queue. For an OTP or password-reset link, that delay sits directly between the user and a completed login.
MailAnvil runs on Cloudflare Workers, so email is sent from the edge PoP nearest to your user — a few milliseconds from Jakarta, not a few hundred. Lower OTP latency means higher login conversion.
Two places Mailchimp wins — be honest
Deliverability reputation. Mandrill has spent a decade earning inbox trust. If you're sending millions of emails to a large international list, that track record matters.
Mature ecosystem. Mandrill predates most of today's providers, so the library coverage and third-party tutorials are deep.
MailAnvil is the better fit when your scale is Indonesian-first and your constraint is cost, payment method, or latency — which describes most Indonesian devs and startups.
Bahasa docs and agent-first
Mailchimp Transactional's docs are English-only, and support is ticket-based. MailAnvil ships Bahasa Indonesia documentation with support over Telegram.
