Resend MCP vs MailAnvil: Choosing an Email API for AI Agents (2026 Comparison)
Resend shipped an official MCP server. That closes the biggest gap it had against MailAnvil — agent-native email. Both now let an AI agent (Claude, Cursor, Claude Code) send transactional email through MCP without a REST integration. So the decision now comes down to the details: daily caps, overage pricing, and how you actually pay.
The MCP side: closer than ever
Resend offers two MCP options:
- Remote server hosted by Resend:
https://mcp.resend.com/mcp(Streamable HTTP, OAuth login) - Local server via npm:
resend-mcp
Add it to Claude Code with:
claude mcp add --transport http resend https://mcp.resend.com/mcp
MailAnvil was built MCP-first — an MCP server (mcp.mailanvil.com) has been live since launch, alongside the REST API. Agents discover and send email without any SDK code in your app.
On capability, both cover send, domains, and contacts. Practical difference: Resend's MCP authenticates with OAuth and sends from your Resend account; MailAnvil's uses your API key and runs on Cloudflare Workers at the edge, so agent-driven sends from Southeast Asia complete in ~10ms network time instead of ~180-200ms to us-east-1.
Free tier: same 3,000/month, different daily reality
| Resend Free | MailAnvil Free | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly volume | 3,000 emails | 3,000 emails |
| Daily cap | 100 emails/day | none |
| Domains | 3 | 1 verified domain required |
Resend's 100/day cap is the real constraint. If an agent batch-sends 150 password-reset emails after a traffic spike, 50 fail. MailAnvil's free tier has no daily cap — burst all 3,000 on launch day if you want.
Pricing at the tiers that matter
Resend's current published pricing (verified Oct 6, 2026):
| Volume | Resend | MailAnvil |
|---|---|---|
| 50,000/mo | Pro $20/mo + $0.90/1k overage | Pro Rp 249rb/mo (~$15) |
| 100,000/mo | Scale $90/mo + $0.90/1k | Max Rp 749rb/mo (~$47) |
At 50k/month, MailAnvil is ~17% cheaper. At 100k/month, Resend's Scale plan costs roughly 2x MailAnvil's Max — and Resend's overage is $0.90 per 1,000 on every plan. That 100k gap is where the FX story compounds: Resend bills in USD on a credit card; MailAnvil bills in IDR with QRIS, GoPay, or bank transfer. For an Indonesian startup, no foreign-transaction fee, no personal-card workaround, invoice in the currency you report in.
Where Resend still wins
Honest assessment — this is not a clean sweep:
- Marketing email. Resend supports broadcasts and audiences; MailAnvil is transactional-only.
- Ecosystem maturity. Resend has more templates, more framework guides, and a larger community. If you need React Email + a huge tutorial library, it's there.
- Enterprise. Resend's Custom tier offers a 99.99% SLA and dedicated CSM. MailAnvil isn't selling to that segment yet.
- Inbound receiving is on both, but Resend's inbound tooling is more battle-tested.
The decision rule
- AI agent sends transactional email, Indonesia-based: MailAnvil. Same MCP capability, no daily cap on the free tier, ~2x cheaper at 100k, QRIS/GoPay, Bahasa docs and Telegram support.
- Marketing + transactional in one platform, English-first team, card payments fine: Resend is the more complete product, and its new MCP server makes it a legitimate agent-native choice.
Both are good. One is priced for USD credit cards; the other is priced for QRIS. Pick the one your finance process can actually pay.
